几十年前自己当村支部书记时，村里广播每天都放这首《红太阳照边疆》，非常熟悉。今天来到了海兰江边，歌中所唱的就是这里。

When I was a party secretary of a village decades ago, everyday the village radio would broadcast this song, The Red Sun Shines on the Frontier，so it is a very familiar tune to me. Now that I am here, at the riverside of Hailan, which is exactly the place in the lyrics.

--An excerpt from President Xi Jinping’s speech on his tour of inspection to Guangdong Village, Dongcheng Township, Helong City of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province, July 16, 2015

2015年全国两会期间，习近平总书记参加十二届全国人大三次会议吉林代表团审议时，接受了来自延边朝鲜族自治州的代表“请总书记到延边去看看”的邀请。几个月后的7月16日，习近平总书记“如约”来到延边州。

During the annual sessions of NPC & CPPCC National Committee in 2015, President Xi Jinping, while attending the deliberations of the Jilin delegation at the third session of the 12th NPC, accepted an invitation to “have a visit to Yanbian” from the delegates of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. Months later, on July 16, President Xi Jinping arrived in Yanbian as promised.

当天，习近平总书记来到位于海兰江畔的和龙市东城镇光东村，村里老年舞蹈队正在排练。伴着《红太阳照边疆》的歌曲，队员们翩翩起舞。习近平总书记说，几十年前自己当村支部书记时，村里广播每天都放这首《红太阳照边疆》，非常熟悉。今天来到了海兰江边，歌中所唱的就是这里。

That day, President Xi Jinping came to Guangdong Village at the bank of the Hailan River in Dongcheng Township of Helong City, when a dance troupe of elderly villagers were rehearsing to the song of The Red Sun Shines on the Frontier. “When I was a party secretary of a village decades ago, everyday the village radio would broadcast this song, The Red Sun Shines on the Frontier，so it is a very familiar tune to me. Now that I am here, at the riverside of Hailan, which is exactly the place in the lyrics.” he said to the troupe.

 “红太阳照边疆，青山绿水披霞光，长白山下果树成行，海兰江畔稻花香……”这首《红太阳照边疆》创作于20世纪60年代，反映了延边人民在中国共产党的领导下努力建设家园，家乡一改从前的荒芜，呈现出果树成行、生机盎然的蓬勃景象。这首歌曾经唱红了祖国大江南北，至今仍然广为传唱。

“The red sun shines on the frontier, where the green hills and lucid waters are bathed in the sunshine. The fruit trees at the foot of Changbai Mountains grow in lines and the rice flowers on the bank of Hailan River flourish.” The Red Sun Shines on the Frontier, created in 1960s, portrays the vibrant new look of Yanbian as a result of the hard work of local people under the CPC leadership, changing the barren landscape into a prosperous place. This song was once very popular across the country and now is still widely sung.

在抗日战争、解放战争和抗美援朝中，生活在延边的汉族、朝鲜族等各族兄弟姐妹生死相依、并肩作战，用鲜血和生命谱写了一曲曲壮丽的英雄赞歌。著名诗人贺敬之曾慨叹：“山山金达莱，村村烈士碑。”

During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the War of Liberation, and the War to Resist the US Aggression and Aid Korea, people of the Han, Korean and other ethnic groups in Yanbian stood united and fought jointly, leaving many great heroic stories. He Jingzhi, a noted poet in China, once wrote a eulogy on this: “Just like all mountains are covered in Jindalai flowers (Korean rosebay), all villages have monuments erected in honour of martyrs.”

1949年9月，中国人民政治协商会议确定朝鲜族为我国的少数民族之一，朝鲜族同胞同各族同胞一起当家成了主人。1952年9月3日，在党的民族政策指引下，延边朝鲜族自治州成立。

In September 1949, the Korean People in China were recognized by the CPPCC as one of China’s ethnic minorities, who became masters of the country together with all other Chinese. On September 3, 1952, the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture was established under the guidance of the Party’s ethnic policies.

今天的延边，是我国唯一的朝鲜族自治州和最大的朝鲜族聚居地区，有着民族团结的优良传统。20世纪50年代，延边州就召开民族团结模范代表会议，开创民族团结宣传月活动先河。

As the only Korean autonomous prefecture in China, Yanbian now is the largest compact inhabited area of the Korean ethnic group, which enjoys the tradition of ethnic unity. In 1950s, it held the conference of representatives of role models contributing to ethnic unity, and then announced September of each year to be the “Month of Ethnic Unity”, which set a precedent across the country.

60多年来，延边州的民族团结进步创建活动不仅从未中断，而且根据时代需要不断创新载体、丰富内容，推动民族团结进步事业走上制度化、规范化轨道。延边州连续五次被表彰为“全国民族团结进步模范集体”。

In well over 60 years, not only has Yanbian never stopped its efforts in promoting ethnic unity and progress, it has also made innovations in forms and contents in line with the development of the times, forging ahead with promoting ethnic unity and progress in an intitutional and normalized manner. Yanbian has been honored with the title “National Model Unit for Contributing to Ethnic Unity and Progress” for five consecutive times thus far.

延边州地处中朝俄三国交界处，位于图们江区域中心，区位优势明显。过去，对外通道不畅以及与腹地联系不够紧密，曾是制约延边发展的最大瓶颈。2009年8月30日，《中国图们江区域合作开发规划纲要——以长吉图为开发开放先导区》获国务院批复，标志着延边开放上升为国家战略。随着通道建设的加速，延边州过去“通而不畅”的局面成为历史，转身变为开发开放的“窗口”。延边州人口只有200多万，却拥有开通了20余条国际国内航线的国际机场。延吉航空口岸自2005年4月被海关总署批准对外开放以来，以惊人的速度发展。2019年，延吉机场累计完成旅客吞吐量166万人次，同比增加9.87%，其中国际旅客吞吐量占比43.03%，正在逐步成为东北亚重要国际航空口岸。

While Yanbian has advantage in its location in that it lies at the heart of the Tumen River region, where China, DPRK and Russia border each other, its constrained access to other countries and less close contact with the inland regions were once the biggest bottleneck for the prefecture’s development. On August 30 in 2009 the Outline of the Plan for Development through Cooperation of the Tumen River Region of China - Changchun, Jilin City and Tumen as Pilot Areas for Development and Opening Up was approved by the State Council, which incorporated opening-up of Yanbian into the national strategy. With stepped-up construction as a thoroughfare, Yanbian, which in the past was “accessible but obstructed”, has now become a “window” for development and opening up. With a population of just more than 2 million, the prefecture now boasts an international airport with over 20 domestic and international air routes. The Yanji International Airport has developed rapidly since its being approved for opening up by the General Administration of Customs in April 2005. In 2019, Yanji Airport completed 1.66 million passenger throughput, up 9.87% year on year, with 43.03% international passengers, making it a major international airport in Northeast Asia.

在中国共产党的领导下，延边州走过了从闭塞到开放、从边疆到前沿、从百废待举到全面建成小康社会的历程。这是我国民族团结进步事业发展的缩影，也是中华民族伟大复兴历史进程的缩影。

Under the leadership of the CPC, Yanbian Prefecture has experienced opening up and building a moderately prosperous society. Its remarkable achievements represent in microcosm the development of China’s cause of ethnic unity and progress, and the historical process of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
